Never too old for fashion
My Mum turned 50 the other day and has been having a mini-crisis ever since. Her mood probably hasn't bee helped by the fact that all the red diesel suppliers in her area ran out of fuel at the same time, but that was no reason to give all her %u201Cyoung%u201D clothes to charity and go out and test drive a Porsche! I was trying my best to persuade her that 50 is the new 30 and that there's no reason why she can't still wear all her skinny jeans and low-cut by classy tops that she wore when she was in her 40s. Obviously my word wasn't good enough, so most of her wardrobe ended up dumped on the doorstep of the local cancer shop.

If only I’d seen the inspirational news story about 86-year-old Pauline Crystal who took a turn on the catwalk to model the latest fashions from Marks & Spencer. OK, the fabulous Pauline, who doesn’t look a day over 60 by the way, was hardly wearing the skinny jeans and sexy tops that my Mum threw out, but there is an almost 40-year age difference between them! What I wanted to tell my Mum, about style not being dependent on youth, was perfectly summed up by Pauline’s modelling.
Actually, it wasn’t Pauline’s first time in front of the cameras; she worked as a model throughout her life, starting at the tender age of three, as well as working as a manager at the popular High Street store when she got too old for the catwalk. Who knows; Pauline and M&S may have created a new trend among fashion designers, something like the fad a few years ago for plus-size models or androgynous males modelling women’s clothing. Older women are still interested in fashion, so why shouldn’t they be represented on the catwalk too? Unfortunately for my Mum, it’s too late to get all her fashionable clothes back from the charity shop; unless she wants to go in and buy them all, of course!
